Open Access Policy

This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.

This journal adheres to best practices in scholarly publishing and complies with the following principles to support open access and responsible research dissemination:

  1. Immediate Open Access
    All content is made freely available upon publication, in accordance with the principle that unrestricted access to research fosters a greater global exchange of knowledge.
  2. Author Rights and Copyright Retention
    Authors retain full copyright over their work and grant the journal permission to publish without imposing any restrictions on reuse or redistribution.
  3. Long-Term Digital Preservation
    The journal ensures long-term access to its content by depositing materials in recognized digital preservation archives.
  4. Persistent Identifiers
    Each article is assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) to guarantee permanent accessibility and reliable citation.
  5. Machine-Readable Licensing
    All articles include embedded machine-readable Creative Commons license information to facilitate proper indexing, reuse, and compliance with open access mandates.
  6. Reuse and Adaptation Rights under CC BY-SA
    The journal permits and encourages the reuse, remixing, and adaptation of content under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA 4.0) license. This allows derivative works for any purpose, including commercial use, provided proper attribution is given and derivative works are distributed under the same license.
  7. Rich Metadata Availability
    Article-level metadata is made available in standard formats to facilitate inclusion in indexing services and aggregators.
  8. Deposit Policy Transparency
    The journal has a clearly defined self-archiving and deposit policy registered in a recognized registry such as Sherpa/Romeo.
  9. Self-Archiving Policy (Green OA)
    Authors are permitted and encouraged to deposit all versions of their manuscript in institutional or subject repositories, including:
  • Preprint (submitted version before peer review)
  • Accepted manuscript (peer-reviewed, pre-publication version)
  • Published version (Version of Record)

No embargo applies.
All articles are published under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike (CC BY-SA 4.0) license, allowing redistribution and adaptation with proper attribution and share-alike terms.
Authors should include a citation and link to the published version via the journal’s DOI.

Aims and Scope

PJEE is an international, peer-reviewed journal that publishes original research papers and reviews in English Education and Applied Linguistics. We welcome contributions from scholars in both EFL and ESL contexts, covering a wide range of topics, including:

  • Analysis of English Literatures in English Education
  • Discourse Analysis in English Education
  • ELT Material Development (K-12 and Higher Education)
  • English Applied Linguistics (EAL)
  • English for Specific Purposes (ESP) in Higher Education
  • English for Young Learners (K-12) and Adults (Higher Education)
  • English Language Teaching (ELT) in Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing
  • English Language Testing and Evaluation
  • Second Language Acquisition (SLA/SLL)
  • Translation in English Education
  • ELT Teachers’ Professional Development (ELT & TPD)

Authors can submit manuscripts of 3,000–5,000 words (IMRAD format) and are encouraged to submit longer papers (5,000–7,000 words) for in-depth studies. We adhere to APA formatting and require references managed using Mendeley, with a minimum of 20 recent sources (75% journal articles and 25% books). The submitted article should meet the minimum standard and use Mendeley otherwise it will be rejected. Premise does not apply quota or no limits for submission. Any author has submitted before deadline of each period is welcomed to get published as long as the authors are serious to revise the reviewed articles.

Journal History

About Premise: Journal of English Education and Applied Linguistics

Publication History:
Premise was first published in December 2011 under an official letter from LIPI (SK No. 0005.006/JI.3.2/SK.ISSN/2011.12, dated December 5, 2011). Initially, the journal was available only in print, with five editions released in December 2011. From 2012 onwards, it adopted a biannual publication schedule, releasing issues in April and October.

In 2015, Premise expanded to include an online version, officially recognized under LIPI's decree (SK No. 0005.2442482X/JI.3.1/SK.ISSN/2015.02, dated February 18, 2015). Since then, both the print and online versions have been published regularly in April and October.

On November 4, 2021, the journal was approved to increase its publication frequency to three issues annually, released in February, June, and October.

Indexing Information:
Premise has been indexed by various reputable databases, including:

  • SINTA (Science and Technology Index): Currently classified under SINTA 3, as per official decree No. B/1796/E.5.2/KI.02.00/20 (December 30, 2020), with an extension under decree No. 204/E/KPT/2022 (October 3, 2022). This classification is valid until Volume 15, Issue 2 (2026).

The journal was indexed by DOAJ (Directory of Open Access Journals) from July 25, 2017, but is currently excluded due to a copyright issue. Premise has submitted a proposal to rejoin DOAJ as of September 2023. Additionally, the journal is pursuing inclusion in Copernicus, Web of Science (WoS), and Scopus.

Author Fees

Article Submission Charge (ASC): 

To ensure the seriousness of submissions, Indonesian authors are required to pay an Article Submission Charge (ASC) of IDR 250,000 upon initial submission. This fee guarantees that your manuscript enters the review process. Thus, Premise does not welcome “fast-tract” option, since Article Submission Charge (ASC) has replaced this model. ASC is valid under official request by an editor sent via email. No authors are allowed to pay ASC unless the designated editor requests authors to do so.

Article Publishing Charge (APC): 

For Indonesian authors, an Article Publishing Charge (APC) of IDR 500,000 is applicable upon acceptance and publication of the article. No authors are allowed to pay APC unless the designated editor requests authors to do so.

For international (non-Indonesian) authors, the APC is waived. However, a nominal Article Submission Charge (ASC) of 20 USD is required to cover the costs of the review process. This payment can be made via PayPal.

Submission Process 

We strongly encourage authors to submit their manuscripts through our online submission system (OJS). This platform allows authors to: 

  • Upload all required files, including the Cover Letter, Title Page, main manuscript, figures, supplementary information, and based on Article Template 2024
  • Track the status of their manuscript throughout the review process. 

Desk Review and Initial Screening

Upon submission, the Editor will conduct a desk review to ensure the manuscript meets the journal’s minimum standards, including: 

  • Word count: 3,000–7,000 words. 
  • Proper use of Mendeley Reference Manager. 
  • A minimum of 20 cited references, with a focus on recent and relevant literature. 
  • An article (research or review) with foreign authors (Indonesians +non-Indonesian) will be prioritized.
  • Foreign author will be definitely prioritized if the article meets the scopes.
  • It takes one month generally and may take shorter than 15 days occasionally.

Payment of ASC

The Article Submission Charge (ASC) is payable once the manuscript has been accepted for review by the Editor-in-Chief. Authors will be notified via email with payment instructions. Thus, Premise does not welcome “fast-tract” option, since Article Submission Charge (ASC) has replaced this model. Thus, no authors are allowed to pay ASC unless the designated editor requests authors to do so.

Letter of Acceptance (LoA).

Authors may request a Letter of Acceptance (LoA) after their manuscript has undergone two rounds of revisions based on feedback from two blind reviewers. Please note that the LoA will only be issued once the revised manuscript meets the journal’s standards. This process typically takes up to one  to two months after the desk review decision is issued. Following desk-review is official review by selected reviewers which may take a month for a round and another month for subsequent round. 

Premise does not apply quota or no limits for submission. Any author has submitted before deadline of each period is welcomed to get published as long as the authors are serious to revise the reviewed articles. However; only 76 articles are published in in a volume yearly.   

Withdrawal Policies

Any author (s) who has submitted an article and the article has been reviewed at least once, will get a penalty as much as 500.000 IDR if they withdraw the reviewed article for no requesting or confirming to editor in chief.

Premise: Journal of English Education and Applied Linguistics (PJEE) is archived in the CLOCKSS archival system to ensure the long-term preservation and continued accessibility of its published content.
